CHAPTER 13

By the time Shelly was through with Athena, they had hit every department store on the Coast. As soon as her feet stepped through her front door Athena dropped the bags of new outfits the girls had helped her to pick out and ran to the hallway mirror. Stepping in front of the mirror with her eyes closed, Athena made a quick wish that she still looked the same way she had when she had left the salon. Counting to three, Athena prayed for the best, then opened her eyes.

It took her three blinks before she believed her eyes and let loose with a yell that surprised even herself. After doing a 360 looking at her new ’do from all angles, she couldn’t help letting loose a second time. Athena didn’t know how long she stood at the mirror admiring her new cut that gave her once one-length shoulder-length hair layers that framed her face and accented now-visible cheekbones. With the subtle makeup job, Athena literally felt like a new person. She was about to run to her room with the rest of her bags to begin sorting all of her loot when she was interrupted by loud banging on her door.

Looking through her peephole first, Athena was surprised to see Hector’s eye peeking back at her as if he were trying to see into her apartment. Opening the door, she let her next-door neighbor have it. “What’s wrong with you, banging on the door like the police?” Athena didn’t even try to control her anger over being startled.

“What’s wrong with you?” Athena repeated when Hector just stood in her doorway staring back at her with a spoon in his hand.

“And what’s with the spoon?” Seeing that Hector was not answering her, Athena turned her back to him and waited for him to follow, knowing from past experience there was absolutely no telling what crazy story Hector had to tell. She had gotten used to his rants at all hours of the night less than a month after she had bought the place years ago. In less than two weeks Athena had met and learned about everyone in Hector’s family and immediate circle of friends.

From his lover of the moment to his one-legged mother in Puerto Rico, Hector could not hold water. However, despite Hector’s inability to focus sometimes, Athena enjoyed him as a neighbor and friend, except when he got a little too involved in her love life or lack thereof. She already had a nagging little sister, she didn’t need a nagging big sister as a next-door neighbor.

It wasn’t until Athena made it into her kitchen and was sipping on a glass of cranberry juice that she realized Hector had not followed her. Walking back into her living room, she looked at the front door and saw it was closed. Athena was about to walk across the lawn to Hector’s to demand he tell her what his problem was for startling her when she heard wheezing coming from the couch.
